Cans for Habitat is a national recycling partnership between the aluminum association and Habitat for Humanity International. Aluminum cans are recycled by, and for, more than 600 participating Habitat affiliates across the country. The money earned goes directly to help build Habitat homes.
Since the program began in 1997, approximately 11.3 million pounds of aluminum cans have been recycled for the program--an equivalent of $4 million, all of which has gone directly to Habitat affiliates and the construction of more than 88 Habitat houses. Local affiliates, churches, volunteers, recyclers, national and local retail outlets and civic organizations work together to "Make Every Can Count!"
Since the late 1990's Habitat of Wilson County has collected aluminum cans as part of its efforts to provide funding to build more homes. This program normally brings $3000-$4000 annually to the affiliate. Corky Hester and Jim Johnson have been instrumental in overseeing this work. They devote time to drive the truck to pick up cans at a designate drop off point (see list below) and to take the cans to Nashville's recycling center. We appreciate Corky and Jim!
Several locations for dropping off aluminum cans are available in Wilson County:
